Game Elements!

Game Elements!

In todays blog post I will be discussing my reflection on the two articles I read "What are the qualities of a game" and "Game design research". I will be reflecting on how games work, what goes into making a game and the qualities of a game which will help me create my own game.

The first article I read is "What are the qualities of a game" by Ian Schreiber. There are atomic elements of a game (which makes it sound so scientific). Schreiber states that the definition of a game isn't "perfect" but a lot of similar definitions appears which show what we need to create a game.

The atomic elements of a game are as follows:
  • Game Design
    Players
  • Objectives (goals)
  • Rules
  • Resources and Resource Management
  • Game State
  • Information
  • Sequencing
  • Player Interaction
  • Theme (Narrative, Backstory, Setting)
  • Games as Systems
What is a critical analysis?

According to Schreiber's paper critical analysis does not mean “fault-finding" which is what I would associate that with the meaning of critical analysis. Schreiber says that critical analysis is looking at the game from an unbiased overview.

There's a short three step process when it comes to critically analysing a game:

  • Describe the game’s formal elements.
  • Describe the results of the formal elements when put in motion.
  • Try to understand why the designer chose those elements and not others.

The second article I read is "Game design research" by Annakaisa Kultima. In this article she discusses notions of a game, game design research and design research. Kultima states that understanding game studies as design research helps with out understanding of game design.

In this article she also discusses the definition of game
Process of Game Design
design from game developer's point of view, for some it means 'game  design' can mean 'emotion engineering' or 'largely  communication' while for the others 'everything that goes into a game is more or less game design'.

Lastly I watched a video "The game design process" which states that the best way to start making a game is by making prototypes first. A prototype can be a model which can be drawn on paper, physical objects, digital prototype. Prototyping helps ideas get even more developed.

I will link some pages that I found interesting:

That's it for today's blog post!😈
