Reading 03!

Reading 03!

To start of this weeks Reading task I read 4 papers that I had saved from last week for my topic which is Classic Game Genres, now reading this was somewhat boring but throughout the third and fourth paper my friend and I decided to study virtually together and we informed each other on the topics we were working on which made this a little more interesting.

Not gonna lie, the TUD Library website was so hard to use for me so instead I decided to use google scholar, I'll try and knowledge myself by learning how to use the website more over the next week and so on.

Anyway, I learned a lot from reading these papers about game studies and game genres.

Thomas Apperley, (2006), Simulation and Gaming, Genre and game studies: Toward a critical approach to video game genres, The University of New South Wales, Sydney

The genre of action is one of which is profoundly connected with cinema, the genres overlap quite clearly. The difference is the interactivity provided by the video game compared to the cinematic and observational aspects of films. The video games provide a stimulus for the senses. Video games are a unique form of entertainment, particularly it separates itself from other forms of traditional media such as films, but that does not mean it does not seek inspiration or other forms of creative stimulus from them. The unique aspect of action in video games is that its generic themes circulate and are determined by the community of players, and therefore is determined by the players themselves.

Dominic Arsenault, Video Game Genre, Evolution and Innovation Eludamos. Journal for Computer Game Culture. 2009; 3 (2), p. 149-176

The evolution of genres in video games is different to other forms of media, this is because there are many different “criss-crosses” between genres and each game is and can potentially be an evolutionary statement in respects to that specific genre. There is a conflict regarding the definition of a genre in the realm of video games, as the interaction of the said audience is more direct and impactful. The feedback is a lot more meaningful. Therefore the whole aspect of genres in video games is regarded as a “mess”.

Another critic is that it is difficult to account for the evolution and adaptation of video games, it is not concrete that what a particular video game belongs to a specific genre, quite contrary to the argument, developers argue that everyone is still “experimenting” and therefore games should not be denoted and characterised on the basis of its genre.

This paper outlines the creation of a more varied and cultivated plan of action for the classification and depiction of video game genres in details that consist of 12 facets and 358 focuses. The authors of this paper evaluated current genre labels from academic, industrial, and common sources using facet analysis which is a practice of knowledgeable organising and representing of content, and then extracted and assorted them through categorisation.  This a new way of a more comprehensive method that offers a foundation for expanded, multi-dimensional analytical access to video games.

Rapeepisarn, K., Wong, K.W., Fung, C.C. and Khine, M.S. (2008) The relationship between game genres, learning techniques and learning styles in educational computer games. In: Z. Pan, X. Zhang, A. El Rhalibi, W. Woo and Y. Li (eds) Technologies for ELearning and Digital Entertainment, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2008, Volume 5093/2008, 497-508.

Different games appeal to different people, so respectively different game genres advance different learning abilities. Deciding what the appropriate style of a particular game in a genre depends on various different variables such as age, gender and racial background.

The teaching aspect is one of importance that should be considered in debt whilst designing a video game. Researching the different learning styles of children will enhance the learning aspect of the game, this will have a massive impact on the success of learning a child experiences through a game.
